The emphasis, for a long time, has been on measuring it by a single indicator: the kilogrammes of CO₂. This measurement is objective, but clearly insufficient. At Regenebike, we have built a tool to measure all of this more accurately. We are now publishing it openly.

What is the Regenerative Impact Observatory

It's a methodology used to score the real impact of the routes we offer. With an index ranging from 0 to 100, we weight six dimensions. It's not a marketing label or promise: they are simple but well-founded indicators, with weights and classification bands. We currently use it successfully, but we will continue to improve and refine it.

The six dimensions (with their weight)

Environment — 25%: Net CO₂ avoided, renewable energy, water, and waste.

Social — 20%: local spending, employment and community interaction.

Travellers' wellbeing — 20%: Nature, rest, and physical and mental health.

Culture — 15%: heritage, local histories and cultural exchange.

Personal transformation — 10%: learning, habit change and intention to act.

Regenerative economics — 10%: Regenerative investment and retained value in the territory.

The Regenerative Index (0-100)

Each cycling route is given a score and a classification: Non-Regenerative (<30) · Minimal Impact (30-44) · Sustainable (45-59) · Sustainable+ (60-74) · Regenerative (75-89) · Highly Regenerative (≥90).

What sets us apart

We are focusing on having a very holistic and multidimensional. This is why we integrate the measurement of two variables at a personal level that are normally excluded from other similar indices: the well-being and personal transformation of the traveller. We believe that regenerative tourism not only repairs the spaces visited and local communities, but also cares for and repairs the traveller. Travel is really about that, not just about CO₂.

Why do we publish it openly?

Our way of understanding cycle tourism tells us that any index that is not open is another way of Greenwashing. That’s why we’re sharing it, in the hope that it will serve as a basis for anyone who genuinely wants to be transparent and measure the impact of a trip in a serious way. And, to be honest, this calculation tool we’re presenting today has room for improvement. We’re working on that: some of the variables are provided by each tour operator, and our aim is to automate this to improve objectivity — even though we know that quantification isn’t always 100% possible.

And so, this presentation is also a Call to action: If you work in impact measurement, regenerative tourism or territorial policies, write to us. We want to contrast and improve it with you.

© 2026 Regenebike. Regenerative Impact Observatory, proprietary methodology v1.1, published on 10 June 2026.
